A Culinary Gem in Naracoorte: The Story of Craig’s Bakehouse & Café

As a food writer, I’ve had the pleasure of visiting countless eateries, but few have left as profound an impression as Craig’s Bakehouse & Café in Naracoorte. Nestled in the heart of the Limestone Coast, Craig's is not just a #bakery and café; it's a testament to the power of simple, honest baking and the magnetic pull of a well-brewed cup of coffee.

Upon entering #Craig’s, the aroma of freshly baked bread is overwhelmingly comforting, an olfactory promise of goodness to come. The pastries, each more inviting than the last, are not merely food; they are narratives of Craig’s culinary philosophy—back-to-basics with a focus on quality and authenticity. The croissants are buttery and flaky, a perfect balance of crisp and tender, while the sourdough boasts a crust that sings under the knife, its interior a perfect chew with just the right tang.

The pies and tarts tell similar tales of meticulous craftsmanship. The apple tart, with its perfectly caramelised top and soft, spiced apple filling, makes you ponder whether you've ever truly tasted apples before. Each pastry is a reminder of the bakery’s commitment to using locally sourced, natural ingredients, which shines through in the vibrant flavours.

Craig’s coffee, a robust blend that complements the sweetness of the baked goods, is equally commendable. The espresso is smooth, with a depth that suggests careful selection and expert roasting by coffee partner White Whale. It’s clear that coffee at Craig’s is more than an afterthought—it's an integral part of the experience.

The mastermind behind this culinary haven is Craig himself, who, despite his initial apprehensions about introducing his concept of Craig's in the historic location of a bakery that had previously held the blue ribbon of bakeries in #Naracoorte, nay, the Limestone Coast for 80 years, has been overwhelmed by the community's embrace. Having lived in the area for over seven years, Craig's vision was simple yet audacious: to bring people together through the universal language of good food and warm drinks. Today, he watches with pride as locals and visitors alike gather over Craig's Bakehouse creations, sharing stories and forging connections.

Craig once shared with me his thoughts on the challenges facing regional bakeries like his, particularly the struggle to balance tradition with modern expectations and the constant fight against the convenience of mass-produced food. Yet, it’s evident that his and the team at Craig's approach—focusing on fundamental baking techniques, superior ingredients, and the coffee culture—resonates deeply with Craig's patrons.

From my corner table, the sense of community is palpable. People don’t just come to Craig’s for food; they come for the experience—for the momentary joy of breaking bread that’s been made with care and sipping coffee that’s been brewed with passion. It’s a formula that seems so simple yet is increasingly rare.

As I leave Craig's, with the lingering taste of almond croissant on my tongue and the comforting buzz of caffeine in my veins, I am reminded of the power of simple pleasures. Craig's Bakehouse & Café has not only captured the essence of what it means to be a community hub but has also set a standard for what a bakery and café should aspire to be.

It’s clear that the concept of back-to-basics baking paired with great coffee and genuine human connections is not just taking hold—it’s thriving.
